Gorgan City “Sirens”

Posted by Klean Dalton On August - 11 - 2014

Gorgon City recently announced plans for their eagerly awaited debut album ‘Sirens’ – which is due for release on October 6th via Black Butter/Virgin EMI. They are now pleased to confirm further details of the full album – including key features, artwork, tracklisting and pre order details.

The first news of ‘Sirens’ came along side the announcement of their new single – ‘Unmissable’ ft. Zak Abel – which will be released a week before the album on September 29th. You can see some making of footage of the single, co-written with Jimmy Napes (Disclosure, Sam Smith, Clean Bandit) and featuring the choir HERE

The story of Gorgon City is a perfect microcosm of the story of how 21st century dance music coming in from the cold. Kye Gibbon and Matt Robson-Scott are two young men who each separately jumped in to clubland’s deepest and choppiest waters (at a time when halfway-decent club culture was as fragmented as it’s been the last two decades and entering a period of extreme marginalisation) and learned to swim the hard way. Since then they’ve become skilled navigators of its currents, observed as streams converged and split again, and more by accident than design were perfectly prepared to ride its current waves of mainstream popularity.

With a deft history of music making behind them individually as Foamo & RackNRuin, once Kye and Matt joined forces as Gorgon City things quickly began to snowball at a barely comprehensible rate. “Because we each had a bit of reputation built up,” says Kye, “the first gigs we got as Gorgon City were pretty big festival ones, and it’s just gone on from there.” Their experiments with vocalists showed that they were as quick and proficient with real song structures as they were with beat-making, and had a knack of bringing out the best in collaborators. They quickly got the backing of the mighty Black Butter Records – who’d already released a couple of Matt’s RackNRuin tracks (the first of which featured Jessie Ware) – just as that label’s explosion into the mainstream, spearheaded by Rudimental, began in earnest.

‘Sirens’ – the full album from Gorgon City – will include all previous hit singles (NB ‘Ready For Your Love’ has now accumulated over 30 million streams) + recent top 10 ‘Here For You’ featuring Laura Welsh and ‘Real’ featuring Yasmin – plus, a remarkable collection of new tracks that unequivocally mark Matt & Kye out as being at the very peak of their writing and production prowess.

Further key features on the album include Maverick Sabre top and tailing the record, Katy B, Erik Hassle and Jenifer Hudson.

‘Sirens’ is a brilliantly cohesive piece of music that perfectly reflects the exciting UK dance pop climate we find ourselves in for 2014 – with Gorgon City firmly at the helm.

30 date ‘Sirens’ tour later this year, which will take GC across UK, EU and the USA – full info coming soon.

Laura Welsh “Break The Fall”

Posted by Klean Dalton On July - 28 - 2014

Laura Welsh will release her new single ‘Break The Fall’ on Monday 11th August through Outsiders/Polydor. Welsh is a modern pop force with an irresistible voice who makes captivating, confessional songs where melancholy meets anthemic euphoria. The 27 year old recently followed up last year’s string of singles with a star turn on Gorgon City’s ‘Here For You’. ‘Break The Fall’ will define her as a star in her own right and on her own terms, though. Her songs, she says, come from a place she can’t explain. When the naturally shy Welsh turns her attention to music, though, all her “subconscious emotions suddenly explode.”

‘Break The Fall’ is a shimmering electro-pop anthem, where marching grooves and cathedral-sized synths swirl around Welsh’s turbulently enchanting vocals. There’s a stunning charisma to Welsh’s voice, a natural magnetism to the way it glides between delicate emotion and bombastic defiance. The song is a tale of betrayal inspired by the breakdown of a marriage within her family and Welsh worked with Bruno Mars and Lana Del Rey producer Emile Haynie to perfect her clear vision for it. Remixes by Gemini, Embody, Para One, Pitron & Sanna, Apple Bottom and Ninetoes will accompany the release.

Laura Welsh was brought up in Staffordshire and introduced herself to the world with last year’s Dev Hynes-produced track ‘Unravel, the spellbinding ‘Cold Front’ and dreamy single ‘Undiscovered’. She is establishing herself as a maverick pop presence with a panoramic, imaginative approach to making music. Welsh worked with an eclectic bunch of co-stars for her upcoming debut album, collaborating with indie polymath Dev Hynes, Robin Hannibal from R&B minimalists Rhye, Jonathan Lipsey (Alicia Keys, Amy Winehouse), Greg Kurstin (The Shins, Beck, Lily Allen), Scissor Sisters’ Babydaddy and three-time Ivor Novello winning Amanda Ghost.

As well as writing a duet with John Legend, Welsh is also the song-stealing voice at the centre of Gorgon City’s ‘Here For You’, which she co-wrote with the electronic duo. ‘Here For You’ is released on June 16th on Virgin EMI and has been Radio One A-Listed. Welsh performed with Gorgon City at Radio One’s Big Weekend and Isle Of Wight Festival and will also appear at Glastonbury, Reading And Leeds with them. Laura Welsh’s debut album, ‘Soft Control’, will be released later this year. Expect bold and brilliant things from this thrilling pop starlet.

Professor Green ft Tori Kelly

Posted by Klean Dalton On July - 28 - 2014

Listen to it here

Professor Green returns with Lullaby, the first single to be taken from his third studio album, Growing Up In Public. Firmly established as one of the crossover superstars of British music, the Hackney born and raised rapper builds on a career that has spawned two Top 3 albums and eight consecutive Top 40 singles – including hits Read All About It (#1), I Need You Tonight (#3) and Just Be Good To Green (#5) – with the September 2014 release of single Lullaby (feat Tori Kelly).

A pop smart smash-in- waiting, Lullaby is produced by Chris Loco (Rita Ora, Tinie Tempah), and features the vocals of US singer songwriter, Tori Kelly, the latest protégé of super-manager Scooter Braun. “It is an honour to be on the same song with such a respected artist like Professor Green.” says Tori. “When I first heard Lullaby I knew it would be an amazing opportunity to sing it. Then when I met him and we got to perform it together, it all seemed to sink in. I became even more excited and more in love with the song.”

The forthcoming release looks set to add another incredible chapter to Green’s all-conquering career which has seen him amass 500,000 album and 1.75million single sales in the UK alone; embark on three headline tours in addition to performing on the main stages of countless festivals such as Glastonbury, V Festival and Wireless; and be nominated for a plethora of awards including the Brits ‘Best Male’ over and above earned NME and MOBO awards. Not to mention a high profile underlined by huge social media statistics – 2+ million Facebook Likes, 2+ million Twitter followers – and the fact that his journey has been documented by Channel 4 in a six episode TV series (Professor Green Unseen and Professor Green Unseen: After Hours).

Nick Mulvey First Mind 12th May

Posted by Klean Dalton On May - 6 - 2014

Nick Mulvey releases ‘First Mind’ on 12th May 2014 through Fiction Records. It was produced by Dan Carey (Hot Chip, Steve Mason) in Streatham.

Nick Mulvey is less the master of reinvention, as he is the master of invention. Invention by its very definition being a ‘unique method, composition, or process’. First Mind ticks all three boxes, and it ticks them in spades.

As a founding member of sprawling, Mercury Prize nominated jazz collective, Portico Quartet, Nick played an otherworldly new instrument called The Hang, and their music still resonates today in broader circles outside of any insular jazz clique (Alt-J quoted one of Nick’s Portico lyrics on their debut album). Nick though wanted a change, and one where the creative process was perhaps a more singular vision, albeit no less liberal-minded.

Putting himself through a guitar school in Cuba, the only Brit in the room, his technique is exquisite, a blur of picked notes and offbeat, irregular timings. Nick is one of life’s great thinkers, and coupling his beautifully delivered verse with the intricacies of his playing, you have something wildly at odds with his peers.

Three single releases into this solo career and Nick’s music is making impressive, encouraging footprints across the globe. Concluding 2013 on the BBC Sound of 2014 shortlist, those introductory singles, Fever to The Form, Nitrous, and the irresistible Cucurucu are picking up fans in all the right places. Playlisted at Radio 1, Radio 2, 6Music, Absolute Radio, and XFM, and armed with a slew of impressive press quotes, its crucially not just the airwaves and printed press that are taking to Nick but their listeners and readers alike.

The confines of the studio, where an artist can pour over every dropped note or wayward vocal, are rarely the litmus test for a musician’s true worth, so it’s equally as encouraging that the past twelve months have taken Nick across the UK and Europe and back again, performing to bigger crowds and selling out venues well in advance. Laura Marling invited him out on a full UK tour last Autumn, Ben Howard has become a big vocal supporter following a support slot in Ireland, and Nick’s upcoming UK and European tour already includes sold-out shows in cities far beyond his London home. Last Summer he was a regular on the festival stages to busy crowds, and this year already looks likely to repeat and surpass that feat. He dips speculative toes in America this March with his first performances out at SXSW in Texas.

First Mind is an engrossing listen, and not easily defined. It encourages an open-mind (the ‘First Mind’ perhaps), and a sense of the worldliness that Nick poured into its making. Cucurucu is an interpretation of DH Lawrence’s poem, Piano, wrapped within a heady groove. And groove, for all its modern day baggage, is at the heart of everything Nick Mulvey does. Nitrous, a song about a daydreamer selling laughing gas, positively radiates with a classic chug and groove when the bassline slinks in. There are contemplative moments too, Fever to the Form and Meet Me There are poignant odes, whilst The Trellis and Juramidam showcase that leftfield, Eastern-inflected guitar technique. It is a record that gets under your skin, and its sense of exploration is palpable.

After an explosive 2013, punk MC iTCH announces the anticipated release of his debut album The Deep End. Following two EPs, a headline UK tour and two huge US tours, including a stint on the legendary Warped Tour, iTCH is finally ready to unleash his incredible debut on March 24th via Red Bull Records, now available to pre-order.

The Deep End includes the singles ‘Best Shot’, ‘Homeless Romantic’ feat. Taking Back Sunday’s Adam Lazarra and the forthcoming single ‘Life Is Poetry’, released March 17th. Other guest vocalists lending their talents to the album include US artist Matisyahu and Less Than Jake’s Roger Manganelli. An album of true originality, the pace and energy never lets up, creating a varied, sonic journey from a bona fide creative.

Of the album, iTCH says: “I’m beyond excited about being able to finally release my first solo album. I’m so proud of this record, I’ve taken the time to get it exactly how I want it to sound and have had the honour of working with some life time heroes. You can hear how much fun I had making this record and how creatively free I was allowed to be. This is without a doubt the best record I’ve ever released.”

A truly impassioned and creative performer, the album has been a long time coming for the former frontman of political punk outfit The King Blues. Following the breakup of his former band, iTCH has forged his own career, focussing on his cutting lyrical style and passion for different musical styles to create a hybrid of hip-hop, punk, pop, electro and rock, all underpinned by iTCH’s unique fire and attitude. Despite being stuck in a wheelchair for the whole summer of 2013 due to an injury sustained at a show, he managed to complete the Warped Tour in the US whilst continuing to write, create and collaborate – including a mixtape tape with Dan The Automator.

Wilkinson, has been on unstoppable form since the release of Need To Know at the beginning of the year. Heartbeat, featuring Arlissa and P Money, followed in May, and paved the way for the Afterglow, featuring the vocals of Becky Hill.  The tune was a huge success and a regular sound in the clubs hammered up and down the country by the likes of Chase & Status, Sub Focus, Andy C and High Contrast among others.  Playlisted across Radio 1, 1Xtra, Kiss, Capital, Capital Xtra and Rinse, the video, which has had over 3.3million views, can be seen here

“This album has tested us as individuals and as a collective. We’re five people fighting for our own ideologies of good music – we clash stylistically and sometimes even personally,” said drummer Jared Champion.

The album, a varied collection of unabashedly vivid and notably thoughtful rock songs, was written and recorded over the course of a year, with various recording sessions taking place at St. Charles Studio in Nashville over the winter and spring with longtime producer Jay Joyce. The approach was highly experimental and based around the idea that that you don’t write a song, you find it. Throughout the process the band stopped listening to other musical recordings almost entirely and Matt Shultz drew songwriting inspiration from listening to those around him interact.

“As individuals we all had fairly vague visions for how we wanted the record to turn out,” lead singer Matt Shultz says. “They were pretty polar. It really became a challenge to combine all these polar opposites together in a cohesive way. We first started writing material that was very intimate and had a very kind of close and hushed sound to it, but our hearts missed that energy and swagger and playfulness we love so much. Once that came to light, the record really started taking shape on its own. It was the uniting of several different ideas that were really different from each other.”

Cage The Elephant’s previous album ‘Thank You, Happy Birthday’ debuted at No. 2 in the US Billboard Top 200 and the band have sold over 550,000 copies of their first two albums to date.
