Hannah Rave Review at the The Patrick Kavanagh

Posted by Steve Willis On August - 25 - 2014

Very occasionally it’s possible to walk into a local venue and simply stumble into the future of music in the UK. That’s what happened this week in Birmingham when we managed to catch an acoustic set by the wonderfully talented and incredibly focused Hannah Brown.

With nothing but a guitar, a microphone and her voice, Hannah managed to captivate the entire audience as she introduced herself and without any fanfare burst straight into her first song. As a singer and songwriter Hannah clearly understand the storytelling potential of music, and the lyrics of Quake reflect that perfectly. With echoes of Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, this cinematic and enigmatic track echoed throughout with a deep melancholy and a sense of repeated regret. The repetition shone through in both the lyrics and the music, reinforcing the bitter cycle told in the imagery of the song.

Hannah interspersed a couple of covers in amongst her original tracks, with Your Picture following on from Quake with a more hopeful and upbeat melody, with smiles from Hannah as she revelled in the stark simplicity of the song.

The whole set that night had echoes of early Sheryl Crow, and had a spellbinding and ethereal quality that captured a very specific time, place and mood, with tales of painfully unrequited love, all told with a heartfelt honesty and the occasional sense of hopelessness. Yet her voice, despite that hopelessness, always seems to offer that sense of good times to come, of optimism and an endearing self-sufficiency.

Hannah uses her talent naturally. Nothing in her set seemed forced in anyway. Her enthusiasm and talent and sheer honesty was heartfelt in every line. She doesn’t simply wear her heart on her sleeve, she lets it shine from her soul and echo around the room.

Hannah Brown has a bright future. The night after the gig we saw she was performing again, this time with a backing group. Although I’ve no doubt that she excelled in that performance as much as the one we caught, I’m glad we caught the acoustic set. The lack of distraction, the elegant purity of one girl and her guitar singing truths and honesty in a random bar in Birmingham, was one of those once in a lifetime finds that you never forget.
Hannah will be releasing her debut album soon, and it won’t be long before you wish you’d caught her before she hit the bigger venues. The smaller gigs are the perfect way to capture her spirit and skill before she hits the big time. Which, with her talent, is practically inevitable.
