Hannah Rave Review at the The Patrick Kavanagh

Posted by Steve Willis On August - 25 - 2014

Very occasionally it’s possible to walk into a local venue and simply stumble into the future of music in the UK. That’s what happened this week in Birmingham when we managed to catch an acoustic set by the wonderfully talented and incredibly focused Hannah Brown.

With nothing but a guitar, a microphone and her voice, Hannah managed to captivate the entire audience as she introduced herself and without any fanfare burst straight into her first song. As a singer and songwriter Hannah clearly understand the storytelling potential of music, and the lyrics of Quake reflect that perfectly. With echoes of Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, this cinematic and enigmatic track echoed throughout with a deep melancholy and a sense of repeated regret. The repetition shone through in both the lyrics and the music, reinforcing the bitter cycle told in the imagery of the song.

Hannah interspersed a couple of covers in amongst her original tracks, with Your Picture following on from Quake with a more hopeful and upbeat melody, with smiles from Hannah as she revelled in the stark simplicity of the song.

The whole set that night had echoes of early Sheryl Crow, and had a spellbinding and ethereal quality that captured a very specific time, place and mood, with tales of painfully unrequited love, all told with a heartfelt honesty and the occasional sense of hopelessness. Yet her voice, despite that hopelessness, always seems to offer that sense of good times to come, of optimism and an endearing self-sufficiency.

Hannah uses her talent naturally. Nothing in her set seemed forced in anyway. Her enthusiasm and talent and sheer honesty was heartfelt in every line. She doesn’t simply wear her heart on her sleeve, she lets it shine from her soul and echo around the room.

Hannah Brown has a bright future. The night after the gig we saw she was performing again, this time with a backing group. Although I’ve no doubt that she excelled in that performance as much as the one we caught, I’m glad we caught the acoustic set. The lack of distraction, the elegant purity of one girl and her guitar singing truths and honesty in a random bar in Birmingham, was one of those once in a lifetime finds that you never forget.
Hannah will be releasing her debut album soon, and it won’t be long before you wish you’d caught her before she hit the bigger venues. The smaller gigs are the perfect way to capture her spirit and skill before she hits the big time. Which, with her talent, is practically inevitable.

Sing it Loud!

Sing it Loud!: Music Department to run BA (Hons.) programme

In exciting news from South and City College Birmingham, the Music Team have successfully validated a 1-year, level 6, BA Honours degree, enabling students to progress from the existing HND Popular Music Practice course. For many years graduating HND students have had to flee to competitor institutions, but now they can finish their studies to degree level in house.
The new course will be the first Popular Music honours degree in Birmingham. The music staff are particularly proud of this achievement, being a reflection of the good practice specifically highlighted in recent IQER inspections of college HE provision.
The franchise builds SCCB’s growing relationship with Birmingham City University, with whom the college delivers many HE programmes. Every franchise course is quality-monitored by stringent university procedures and this validation was no different. Senior figures from academia and industry gathered to vet the proposal – two BCU faculty deans, external academics from Nottingham Trent and Southampton Solent universities, members of Academic Registry and more.

UK SUBS – (Main Stage Sat 20th Sept)

Welcoming UK Subs to Undercover Festival as part of Charlie’s 70th year celebrations.

Incredibly, 2010 marked the fifth decade in which the U.K.Subs had continually graced the Punk Rock scene.

Led by the indefatigable Charlie Harper (now venerated as the godfather of UK punk) the band inspired by the Damned at the birth of British Punk, formed, late in 1976 has continued and thrived, through various line-ups and record companies. Touring worldwide for 35 plus years, they maintain and pioneer the true spirit of punk rock, without the compromise and watering-down that has affected so many of their contemporaries. There has never been any division of fan and band with the Subs, and Charlie’s unrelenting love of his audience and music shines through.

NEW TOWN KINGS – (main Stage Fri 19th Sept)

Back at Undercover by popular demand after a very successful 2013 show.

New Town Kings, a 9-piece ska band from Essex, England. Playing their our music at an ever-increasing range of events, gigs, raves and festivals including everything from Guilfest on 3 occasions, Boomtown Fair and One Love to South London squats with regular tours and European dates in between. Early in 2014, New Town Kings will be getting back into the studio to record an as yet unnamed release, planned for early summer 2014, the perfect time for their inimitable take on traditional ska, rocksteady and reggae. This combined with a full season of tours and festivals, means that the year looks good for the New Town Kings.

RISKEE & THE RIDICULE (Sunday 21st Sept)

Absolute chaos (not a band name) will take to the stage with this cracking outfit from Kent, if you have not seen them before stand back, take a deep breath and enjoy / experience the phenomenon from Kent called RISKEE & THE RIDICULE…. ‘One of the best bands on the UK Underground punk scene, Riskee and the Ridicule are a band we’ve been hearing about for a good few months now… With a similar style and ethos to many popular UK punk bands (think Sonic Boom Six, Imperial Leisure and The Skints), this is a band who have all the right ingredients for success. Catch them now on their way to the top…’ – THE PUNK ARCHIVE

THE WONDER BEERS (main stage Sunday 21st Sept)

A highly entertaining 3 piece from Surrey certainly getting noticed on the circuit; check them out guaranteed to put a smile on your face and get your feet tapping with their energetic anthemic tunes. Three geezers from Surrey having a load of fun playing geezer punk/ lad rock; if you like partying, are fed up of the grind and want to have a good time, then look no further.

T & THE MUGS (Friday 19th Sept)

From Bracknell – T & THE MUGS who along with fellow Bracknell Band RAGE DC and also from Reading ON TRIAL UK give the early proceeding on the Friday at Undercover a distinctly Berkshire Punk feel… T & the Mugs are a four piece no nonsense old school punk band playing short and angry material with a no frills, no bullshit approach.

Porter Robinson New Video

Posted by Lauren Truby On June - 19 - 2014

Porter Robinson makes his acting debut in the new video for ‘Lionhearted’, the lead single from his forthcoming debut album ‘Worlds’. Setting forth on a fantastical and vandalous rampage, Porter leads a disruptive gang of Harajuku girls through the night, and in the wake of their destruction beautiful chaos ensues.

Directed by Jodeb (who previously worked with Porter on his ‘Language’ music video), ‘Lionhearted’ is brought further to life with colorful authenticity by Harajuku-based stylist Elleanor Yamaguchi a.k.a. Elleanor Tokyo (who also stars in the video).

The new single (out in the UK on August 3rd) is a driving alt-electronic anthem that features surging vocals from Swedish indie outfit Urban Cone as it pushes-and-pulls between ambient sighs and power chords, calling to mind an imaginary battle that is now realized in its stunning new video.

‘Lionhearted’ is the lead single from Porter Robinson’s debut album ‘Worlds’, out August 11th on Virgin EMI. It follows #1 Hype Machine track ‘Sad Machine’ (a duet between Porter and a vocaloid robot), and the dazzling ‘Sea of Voices’.

‘Sea Of Voices’ and ‘Sad Machine’ are available for instant download as part of the ‘Worlds’ album pre-order now live at

Following the release of ‘Worlds’, Porter will head out on a massive North American headline tour that will see him playing live for the first time; manipulating multi-tracks, triggering samples, playing midi keys and using controllers to create a live show. Lemaitre and Giraffage will provide support on the upcoming tour.

Union J New Single

Posted by Lauren Truby On June - 19 - 2014

Pop heartthrobs Union J are back and set to release their brand new single ‘Tonight (We Live Forever)’ on August 17th. The track will be the first song to come from their second album scheduled for release later this year.

The uptempo number is an ode to the special relationships in people’s life which make everything enjoyable and fun. The band said: “This track sums up what Union J are about in terms of our sound and it also reflects who we are together – a group of friends having the time of our lives.

“It’s a happy song that lifts our mood whenever we hear it. We’ve had an absolute blast recording new material – working with some of the world’s best songwriters and producers has been a dream come true and we can’t wait for people to hear what we’ve done.”

The band have been writing and recording new material both in the UK and the States working with songwriters such as Jamie Scott (One Direction, The Vamps and 5SOS, Jessie), Jessie Shatkin (Kylie Minogue, Sia) and Red Triangle (Little Mix, One Direction) along with music heavyweights such as Ryan Tedder and Diane Warren.

In the two years since Union J went from talented hopefuls to overnight sensations on the 2012 series of The X Factor, there has been no stopping their success. Their debut hit single ‘Carry You’, the follow up smash ‘Beautiful Life’ and their self-titled debut album, all hit the Top 10 in 2013 before they set off on a major sold out 18 date tour across the UK and Ireland. They also released two books and launched their own merchandise range including dolls, fragrances, stationery, and jewellery.

Racking up 1.5 million followers on Twitter and the same number of likes on Facebook, Josh, JJ, Jaymi and George are poised for a massive second half of the year with live dates booked throughout summer and their eagerly anticipated second album set for release through Epic Records. 2014 is set to kick into gear for Union J.

Debut EP from Jacko Hooper‏

Posted by Lauren Truby On June - 19 - 2014

“For You”

The Debut EP out 30th June 2014

For You is the debut official release from Brighton singer-songwriter Jacko Hooper. A year in the making For You pays homage to the insanely dedicated fan base that has followed Jacko through these early years, seeing he grow from a bedroom recording artist to gathering youtube views of over half a million and self-releasing CDRs in 500 runs (that sold out in 6 days!) and now this, his first official physical release, this…is…‘For You’.

Recorded off the back of an incredibly successful KickStarter campaign that achieved

full pledge backing within only 50% of the timeframe, For You was recorded over the space of eight weeks in Jacko’s hometown, Brighton. Produced by Paul Steel (Paul’s production and writing credits include Empire of the Sun, Mika, Saint Raymond, PNAU) For You is Jacko’s richest and more realised work to date, balancing the intimacy and simplicity of Jacko’s bedroom odes to loves lost and found, coupling them with a new forceful energy, highlighting the maturing songwriting of Jacko’s newer material whilst still maintaining the honest approach that his music’s loved for.

The record itself covers two primary topics, love and fear. As ever Jacko’s own brutally honest experiences form the forward drive throughout, however the true purpose of his music isn’t ever his own story but the new ones created from it.

“I don’t feel that the original story of why I wrote the song is necessarily the most

important thing, I think the fact people can listen to it and all of a sudden it becomes

this different story with a totally different meaning is the best thing of all, to be able to connect to it people it needs to be their story, not mine”. With For You showcasing true emotion and honesty, Jacko hopes that more stories

can be created from his very own.
